Contributions of Physical Therapy in Temporomandibular Joint Disorders and Orofacial Pain, and Their Relationship with Sleep
Understanding temporomandibular joint dysfunction and its connection to sleep

Morning headaches and pain in the temple or cervical region are often associated with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders and orofacial pain.

These disorders are characterized by a group of signs and symptoms arising from alterations in the stomatognathic system related to functional imbalance.

Among the most common factors are changes in dental occlusion and the chewing muscles, as well as structures connected to the head and neck.

TMJ disorders negatively affect both sleep quality and overall quality of life.

The main symptoms include pain while chewing, difficulty opening the mouth, joint sounds, restricted movement, and trouble performing functional activities.

The etiology is multifactorial, although muscular hyperactivity plays a central role, often associated with postural changes in muscular chains.

Posture evaluation has an important functional role. A thorough anamnesis and physical examination performed by a physical therapist are essential contributions to a multidisciplinary approach, alongside dentistry and speech therapy.

Early intervention by a physical therapist, whether in clinical practice or as part of pre- and post-operative follow-up with a maxillofacial surgeon or orthodontist, improves outcomes and increases treatment adherence.

Research shows a strong link between TMJ disorders and emotional and physical aspects, including pain phenotypes and depression.

The goals of physical therapy include: reducing muscle spasms, evaluating musculoskeletal pain, promoting muscle relaxation, restoring function, improving mobility, decreasing reliance on pharmaceuticals, reintegrating the musculoskeletal system, reducing swelling, and improving sleep quality, among others.

Sleep, temporomandibular joint disorders, and orofacial pain are closely related. Stay alert!
