Lack of Concentration
What can you do to improve it?

Do you have trouble concentrating on work tasks? Do you feel that your memory fails you on certain occasions? If the answer is “yes,” you may be experiencing not only concentration and memory issues but also a sleep disorder.

Some sleep disorders, such as insomnia and sleep apnea, are quite common. However, many people are unaware that these conditions can directly impact their ability to concentrate and focus..

During sleep, the brain processes and stores information acquired during the day. Without restful sleep, concentration problems may arise. In addition, other symptoms can occur, such as excessive daytime drowsiness, headaches, irritability, depression, and memory loss.

Sleep Disorders that Hinder Concentration

The most common sleep disorder is insomnia. It is often related to poor sleep habits, depression, anxiety, lack of physical activity, chronic illnesses, or certain medications. Symptoms include difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, as well as feeling unrested upon waking.

What is the treatment for insomnia? Treatment typically involves improving sleep habits, implementing cognitive behavioral therapy, and addressing underlying causes. In some cases, medication may be prescribed, although it can cause side effects and should be used under medical supervision.

Another disorder is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which is characterized by the obstruction of the upper airway during sleep, often accompanied by a drop in blood oxygen saturation and brief awakenings to breathe.

Symptoms include loud, frequent snoring and daytime drowsiness, even after a full night of sleep.

To diagnose OSA, a healthcare practitioner may order sleep monitoring tests. One option is the Biologix Sleep Test®, a simple, practical, and efficient at-home test that eliminates the need to spend the night in a sleep lab. At bedtime, the user simply places the Oxistar® sensor, a high-performance oximeter, on their finger and starts the test in the Biologix app. The following morning, the results are available within seconds.

Another diagnostic method is polysomnography, a more comprehensive test conducted overnight in a sleep lab. During this procedure, sensors monitor airflow through the nose and mouth, blood oxygenation, heart rate, brain activity, and limb and thorax movement.

Treatment may include lifestyle changes such as weight loss, the use of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) devices, or, in milder cases, oral appliances. For some patients, surgery may be recommended.

Sleep Hygiene Tips to Improve Concentration

Sleep hygiene refers to habits that help maximize the benefits of sleep. While it may not work for everyone, especially for those with untreated sleep disorders, it can enhance results for those already under medical care. Additionally, following these recommendations promotes overall health:

  • Keep a regular sleep and wake schedule, even on weekends and holidays.
  • Avoid staying in bed too long after waking up, and do not go to bed unless you feel tired.
  • Use your bed only for sleeping; avoid working, studying, or eating there.
  • Do not read, watch television, or use your cellphone before bedtime.
  • A short 30-minute nap can help restore energy. Avoid multiple naps during the day, and do not nap after 3 p.m.
  • For most people, nighttime physical activity affects sleep quality, although this can vary.
  • Do not consume coffee, tea, chocolate, or soda after 6 p.m. Avoid alcoholic beverages for at least six hours before bedtime, and do not smoke close to bedtime.
  • If you snore, try different sleeping positions, such as placing a pillow between your knees or using a body pillow. In any case, consult a specialist to rule out a sleep disorder.
  • Opt for lighter evening meals to aid digestion, but do not go to bed hungry.
  • Adjust your bedroom temperature for comfort; excessive heat or cold can interfere with sleep.
  • Sleep long enough to feel rested. Most adults need seven to eight hours of sleep per night, although individual needs may vary.

A healthy lifestyle, avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, following a balanced diet, engaging in regular physical activity, and maintaining a healthy weight, supports good sleep hygiene and promotes better concentration during the day.
